Mr. Walter Knight

A 60-years-old veteran of the South African war, Mr. Walter Knight, passed away at his home, 47, Washbrook-road, Rushden, on Friday morning.

Mr. Knight came from his native village of Olney, Bucks, when only a boy and had lived in Rushden ever since, commencing work with Messrs. John Cave and Sons and serving with this firm until only six days before his death. He joined the Rushden division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in 1896 and went to South Africa as an ambulance worker during the Boer War. Mr. Knight had since become a member of the Wellingborough District Branch of the South African War Veterans’ Association. During the last war, Mr. Knight carried out duties of a special constable. He was always well-known in Rushden and had at various times served as a waiter at the “Oakley” and “Railway” hotels. At the time of his death he was a popular member of the Windmill Club.

He leaves a widow, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Knight, a son, Mr. Cecil Knight, and five daughters, Mrs. D. Houghton, Mrs. C. Clarke, Mrs. E. Neville, Mrs. P. Quincey, and Mrs. C. Sanders.

The burial took place on Monday afternoon, when the funeral service was conducted at the cemetery chapel by the Rev. W. L. Warrington, curate of St. Peter’s Church. The mourners were: Mrs. M. E. Knight and Mr. C. Knight (widow and son), Mr. and Mrs. D. Houghton, Mr. and Mrs. Clarke, Mr. and Mrs. Neville, Mr. and Mrs. Quincey, Mr. and Mrs. Sanders (sons-in-law and daughters), Mrs. L. Joyce (sister), Mr. A. Tester (nephew), and Miss E. Harriman (sister-in-law).

The Rushden division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was represented by Mr. E. J. Baxter, Mr. F. Tassell, Mr. A. E. Beardsmore, Mr. J. C. Wright and Mr. A. Prigmore. Mr. B. Knibbs, Mr. F. Tassell, Mr. A. E. Beardsmore and Mr. J. C. Wright represented the South African War Veterans’ Association.

Mr. J. Rawson and Mr. Botterill were representatives from Messrs. J. Cave and Sons Ltd.

Mr. T. Swindall and Son were responsible for the funeral arrangements.
