Rushden Echo, 27th October 1916, transcribed by Gill Hollis

Mr. Thomas Sargent Knight

Aged Tradesman’s Death – A well-known and highly-respected Rushden tradesman passed away on Monday at 12, York-road, Rushden, in the person of Mr. Thomas Sargent Knight, who had attained the advanced age of 81 years.  Until recently the late Mr. Knight was a remarkably healthy man, and he retained possession of most of his faculties until the last.  A few weeks ago he underwent an operation for an affliction of the eye, and from that time his health began to fail.  Gradually becoming weaker, he passed peacefully away at about noon on Monday.  For very many years the late Mr. Knight carried on a business as retail boot dealer and repairer in premises in Duck-street, and he resided at that particular house for 57 years, only retiring from business last Christmas.  Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Knight celebrated their diamond wedding, but the latter pre-deceased her husband in January last.  Recently the deceased gentleman has been residing with one of his sons, Mr. Ernest Knight, and it was at his residence that he passed away.  Mr. Knight was the second son of the late Mr. Ebenezer Knight, and he leaves four sons – Mr. F. S. Knight, Mr. A. Knight (Irthlingboro'), Mr. W. E. Knight, and Mr. E. Knight, and one daughter – Mrs. Amos Wright.  There are also nine grandchildren – Mr. F. W. Knight, Mrs. G. Bayes, Mr. H. Wright (Dewsbury), Corpl. E. Wright, who is in Egypt, Mrs. W. Denton (New Zealand), Pte. R. Knight, who is wounded and in Netley Hospital, Mrs. A Gell, Miss Elsie Knight and Miss Lily Knight.  The funeral took place yesterday at the Rushden cemetery, and the obsequies were conducted by the Rev. E. F. Walker.  The coffin was of polished elm with brass fittings and bore the inscription:-

THOMAS SARGENT KNIGHT
Died October 23rd, 1916
Aged 81 years.

The mourners comprised Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Knight (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. A. Knight (son) and Mr. Amos Wright (son-in-law).  Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Knight (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Knight (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. F. W. Knight and Mrs. G. Bayes (grandchildren), Miss Elsie Knight and Miss Lily Knight (grandchildren).  The other grandchildren were unable to be present.  A number of beautiful floral tributes to the memory of deceased were placed on the grave.  The funeral arrangements were ably carried out by Mr. T. Swindall.
