Rushden Echo, February 15th 1924, transcribed by Kay Collins
Ernest Albert James

Sudden Death at Rushden
Plumber Taken Ill on Top of House
Assistant’s Prompt Action

The death took place with suddenness and in tragic circumstances on Friday last of Mr Ernest Albert James (63), of “Ferndale,” Higham-road, Rushden. Mr James, a plumber, was working on the top of a house in course of erection (by Mr R Marriott, builder) in Robinson-road, and he complained to the apprentice attached to him (Frank Wright, of Irthlingborough, a youth of 16) that he felt queer. Shortly afterwards Mr James almost collapsed and was in great danger of falling. Young Wright, with commendable presence of mind, secured Mr James with ropes, and Wright and his mates, with the use of planks, were able to get Mr James down to the ground in safety. Great credit is due to Wright for his level-headed action in doing the right thing promptly. Mr Marriott’s light motor-lorry was procured, and Mr James, placed on the Athletic Club stretcher, was motored home. Dr. Muriset quickly attended and rendered all possible aid, but Mr James passed away without regaining consciousness, the cause being cerebral haemorrhage. Much sympathy has been expressed, verbally and by letters, with the bereaved relatives and friends. Mr James had had a similar seizure about twelve months ago, while working in St Mary’s Church, Higham Ferrers.

Deceased was a native of Slough, Bucks. He and his wife and family came to Rushden to live 27 years ago, and during the whole of that time he had been in the employ of Mr R Marriott.

Mr James was held in very high esteem by the many who knew him. He did not take any part in public activities, being greatly devoted to his home and the hobby of gardening.

There are left to mourn their loss, the widow, three sons, four daughters, and three grandchildren.
