HOWLAND – On July 23, at 118, Newton road, Rushden, Bernard Reginald Howland, aged 23 years.

Local Obituary - Mr BR Howland, of Rushden

Mrs ME Howland [Mary Elizabeth, nee Bates], of 118, Newton road, Rushden, was bereaved of her only son, Mr Bernard Reginald Howland, aged 23, on Tuesday, when he passed away after a long and painful illness.

Mr Howland was a cripple from birth and was well-known to Rushden people. He was born in the town.

The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, Mr J Bennett, of the Succoth Baptist Church, conducting the service at the deceased’s home.

The mourners included Mrs ME Howland (mother), Mr J Bates and Mr WH Bates (uncles), Mrs J Bates (grandmother), Mrs GW Bates (aunt), Mrs L Bates (cousin), Mrs F Buckle, Bedford, and Mrs T Mason (friends).

Wreaths were inscribed as follows: My darling, from his sorrowing mother – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God; With love dear Berny, from Grandmother and Aunty Mabel and Cousins, Westcliffe-on-Sea – At rest; In loving memory from Uncle Jack, Aunt Annie, Cousin George and Rose; In loving memory of Bernie, from Uncle Will and Aunt Nellie, Wellingborough; To Berny, from Uncle Walter, Aunt Jenny and family – Peace, perfect peace; In loving memory, from Nancy, Tom, Mabel, and little Audrey; In loving memory of dear Bernard – Now hath passed from earthly care God Himself the soul will keep, Giving His beloved sleep – From Mr and Mrs Leeson and family; In deepest sympathy, from all at 22 Albion place – We have not seen, we cannot see the Happy Land above, from sin and death and suffering free, where all is peace and love; In loving memory of Bernie from Mr Buckle and Ettie, Bedford; To Bernie with deepest sympathy from Mrs Allen and Raymond; With sympathy and regret, from Mr and Mrs FL Sanders, 111 Newton road, Rushden.

Messrs. T Swindall and Sons were the undertakers.
