Mrs Hilda Winifred House

Jeweller, poet and singer

Hilda House
THE funeral was held yesterday of Mrs Hilda Winifred House who, with her late husband Percy, ran a family jewellery business in Rushden.

Born in Bedfordshire, Mrs House had moved to Rushden to work caring for children and it was in the town that she met Percy.

They married in 1935 and together set up the business, first in Station Road and then at its current location of 54 High Street, in 1952.

Mrs House was 88 when she died on Thursday, November 22.

Son Adrian, 44, said: "She was such a well-known and loved person in the town her loss has been felt by many people. Both myself and my wife Donna miss her and know that that goes for a lot of other people too, especially her two grandchildren."

Her chief interests were music and singing, and with her husband, were founder members of the town operatic society. She was a church organist for many years and was a keen helper in the Oxfam Shop.

Mrs House was a member of The Inner Wheel Club of Rushden for more than 30 years and also belonged to The Flower Club.

She lost her husband Percy, after 65 years of marriage, and then ill health made her unable to drive. However she could still be seen out and about on her electric scooter, still playing the piano and entertaining the elderly at the Serve Day Centre.

She enjoyed writing poetry and had two books published, raising several hundred pounds for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, her chosen charity.

The funeral service was held at Park Road Baptist Church, Rushden.
