The Rushden Echo, 12th December, 1924, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. Charles Sydney Hodson

Fatal Collapse In A Factory
Inquest On Rushden Man’s Death

The sudden death of Mr. Charles Sydney Hodson, of Crabb-street, Rushden, which occurred on Monday, caused widespread regret among a large circle of friends.  The story of Mr. Hodson’s death was told at an inquest which was held on Monday, conducted by Mr. J. C. Parker, Deputy Coroner.

Mr. Leonard Hodson, of Crabb-street, Rushden, a boot manufacturer, and son of the deceased, in his evidence, said that Mr. Hodson was 58 years of age.  On Monday morning, when his father left the house, he was in his usual health.  Receiving a call at 7.40 a.m., witness went to the factory and there found his father on the floor, unconscious and breathing heavily.  He loosened his clothes and sent for the doctor.  Two years ago the deceased was run over by a motor-car.

Alfred Robinson, of 100, Harborough-road, Rushden, an employee of Mr. Leonard Hodson, said he was in the clicking-room at the time the deceased was below in the lasting-room.  He heard a snore and went into the lasting-room downstairs, where he found deceased lying on his back unconscious.  Witness obtained assistance and went for a doctor.

Dr. Muriset said he was called to the deceased about 20 minutes to eight.  On arrival he found deceased was dead.  He considered that the cause of death was cardiac trouble and thickening of the arteries.  He was very ill when he was knocked down on the Bedford-road two years ago, and was a long time recovering.

The Coroner entered a verdict of “Death from cardiac failure.”

The funeral took place on Wednesday, the Rev. P. E. Robson (Rector) performing the ceremony.  The mourners were Mrs. C. Hodson (widow), Mr. E. Hodson (son), Mrs. E. Houghton (daughter), Mr. O. Hodson (son), Mrs. L. Hodson (daughter-in-law), Mr. C. Houghton (son-in-law), Mr. C. Cherry (brother-in-law), Mrs. A. Wildman (niece), Mr. William Robinson, and Mrs. Farrar (friends).  There were no wreaths by request, except two evergreen tributes from the dead man’s workmates.

Mrs. C. Hodson and the family of the late Mr. Hodson wish to thank sincerely all those kind friends who sent messages of sympathy in their heavy bereavement.  Will friends please accept this acknowledgement?
