Mr Herbert Hirons

Former Resident’s Death


A well-known former Rushden resident, Mr Herbert Hirons, late landlord of the Wheatsheaf Inn, died in Northampton General Hospital yesterday week. Mr Hirons was a native of Irthlingborough and was for some time steward at the Gladstone Club, Finedon.

In 1914 he became licensee of the Wheatsheaf Inn, Rushden, where he remained until 1927, when he lost his wife.

He then returned to Irthlingborough, and three weeks ago he was admitted to Northampton Hospital. He was 48 years of age. The funeral took place at Rushden Cemetery on Saturday, the Rector (the Rev Travers S Stoney) officiating. The mourners were Mr H Hirons, Mr R Hirons, Mr L Hirons, and Mr F Hirons (brothers), and Mr P Hyde and Mr F Ballard (sons-in-law).

THE DEATH took place at 40, Windmill-road, on Monday of Mrs Bertha Ellen Hirons, the wife of Mr Herbert Hirons, who up to a few months ago was the landlord of the Wheatsheaf Inn, where they had lived for twelve years. Aged 45, Mrs Hirons was born at Irthlingborough. The funeral took place yesterday.

The Hirons: My granny Hyde was born Violet Phyllis Hirons on 5th March 1906 - died Dec 1973. She was the second daughter of Herbert Hirons and Bertha Ellen Hirons nee Brockwell; they had married in 1901. The elder daughter Dora Elizabeth (1902-1984) married Fredrick Ballard. Herbert died from cirrhosis of the liver.
