Rushden Echo, 27th November 1914, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Death of Mr. John Hewitt
Rushden Tradesman Passes Away

With very sincere regret we record the death of Mr. John Hewitt, which took place this morning at his residence, 52, Station-road, at the age of 44 years. The deceased gentleman had for ten years carried on business as bespoke boot maker and repairer, and was well-known and highly respected throughout the town. The end really came to him as a happy release, as he had suffered with heart trouble for the past eleven years, the last twelve months having been the worst period of his prolonged illness.

For the past month he had been by no means well, but managed to keep at his work until a fortnight ago, when he was compelled to take to his bed. Dropsy supervened, and this culminated in his death this morning.

By religious persuasion he was a Wesleyan, being a member of that society, and for many years, until failing health prevented him, he was a teacher in the Rushden Park-road Wesleyan Sunday Schools. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter, to mourn their loss. Owing to his continued ill-health, the late Mr. Hewitt had recently disposed of his house and business to Mr. George Leeding, by whom it will now be continued.

4th December 1914

The funeral of the late Mr. John Hewitt, Station-road, whose death we reported in our last issue, took place on Monday at the cemetery. The first portion of the obsequies was conducted in the Park-road Wesleyan Church by the Rev. R. Heaps, who also officiated at the graveside. The coffin was of polished elm with brass fittings and bore the inscription: John Hewitt, died Nov. 27, 1914; aged 44 years. The mourners comprised Mrs. J. Hewitt (widow) and Master W. Hewitt (son), Master Albert Hewitt (son) and Miss Lily Hewitt (daughter), Mr. James Hewitt (father), Mrs. J. Bradshaw (sister), Mr. J. Hewitt (brother), and Mrs. J. Hewitt (sister-in-law), Mrs. W. Hodby (mother-in-law), Mr. W. Fox (brother-in-law), Mrs. F. Foster, of Nuneaton (sister-in-law), Mrs. S. King and Miss M. Fox (nieces). A beautiful wreath from the teachers of the Park-road Wesleyan Sunday School was placed on the grave, also one from Fred and Kate, and nephews and nieces (Nuneaton).

Mrs. Hewitt and family desire to express sincere thanks for the many kind messages of condolence and sympathy they have received in their sore bereavement. [he is buried in Grave E298]
