Rushden residents will learn with regret of the death of a popular and well-known resident of the town, in the person of Mr Joseph Garley, of Brookfield-road. Anyone connected with sport, especially football, and club life in Rushden will bear testimony to the geniality of Mr. Garley. In football circles Mr Garley was a familiar figure, and he was for some time a committeeman of the Football Section of Rushden Sports Ltd. An ardent supporter of the town team, the deceased was present at practically all home matches, and also many of the away fixtures. Mr Garley retired from the committee last year. In club life the deceased took an active interest in the welfare of the movement, and there were not many activities connected with the clubs in which he did not participate. Mr Garley was a member of the Windmill Club, and he was an ex-president of this club. He also held other offices. For a long time deceased had been unable to do any work, and he had been in indifferent health for twelve months, though he was out as recently as Sunday last. The cause of death, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, was cancer. All his life he had lived in Rushden, being born here 69 years ago. Besides the widow, there are left to mourn their loss four sons and three daughters, Mr Albert Garley of Australia, Mr Oliver Garley, of Leicester, Mr Herbert Garley and Mr Arthur Garley, of Rushden, Mrs. Frazer, of Scotland, Mrs. Frazer, of Australia, and Mrs. Gadsby, of Australia, who is at present home on holiday.
