Denis James Felce
The Only Child - Teachers Attend a Scholar’s Funeral at Rushden

Denis James Felce, whose funeral took place at Rushden, was seven years of age and the only child of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Felce. He attended St. Mary’s Sunday School, and his father is employed by Messrs. Walter Sargent and Co.

The funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Church, and the company attending included teachers from Denis’s day school – Mr. S. A. Lawrence (headmaster), Miss M. Wright, Mr. H. Hales, Miss N. Groome, Miss K. O’Connor, Miss C. M. Bennett, Mrs. M. Levy, Mr. H. Devlin, and Miss D. Hill (headmistress of the Infants School), with Councillor E. A. Sugars (chairman of the School Managers). Miss I. Stiling represented the Sunday School.

“Suffer little children to come unto Me….” The passage from Mark was read. And the service ended with the hymn, “Loving Shepherd of Thy Sheep,” sung unaccompanied.

When the small white coffin had been placed to rest at the cemetery, the Rector recited the opening verse of “Safe in the arms of Jesus.”

Dawkins and Mrs. Wheatley (uncle and great-aunt), Mr. R. J. Rowell and Mrs. Hinman (cousin and great-aunt). Mr. J. Brawn and Mrs. H. Felce (uncle and aunt), Mrs. Dawkins (great-aunt), and Mr. L. Bayes, Mr. Peter Tilley and Mrs. S. Tilley (cousins).
