Rushden Echo, 29th December 1916, transcribed by Gill Hollis
The Late Mrs W A Evans

Rushden Resident’s Death
Mrs. W. A. Evans Succumbs To An Internal Complaint

We deeply regret to record the death of Mrs. Alice Eliza Evans, which took place at the Victoria Hotel, Rushden on Friday last, at the age of 54 years.

The deceased lady, who was the wife of Mr. W. A. Evans, the proprietor of the Victoria Hotel, Rushden, had for the past three months been a great sufferer from an internal complaint, which she bore with remarkable patience.  Everything within the bounds of modern surgery was done for the sufferer but unfortunately without avail, and the end came peacefully at about 3.15 a.m. last Friday in the presence of the whole family with the exception of the second son Frank who is serving with his Majesty’s forces in India.  The eldest son, Battery Sergt. Major C. W. Evans, was fortunately home on leave from the front where he has been for the past twelve months.

The late Mrs. Evans leaves a husband, three sons, and two daughters to mourn their loss.  During her two and half years’ residence in Rushden the deceased had made many friends, and she was so highly respected throughout the town and district that the news of her death came as a great shock to many.  Mr. Evans and family have received many expressions of sympathy from all classes of the community.

The funeral took place on Sunday at the cemetery, the first portion of the obsequies being conducted at the family residence by the Rev. P. Robson (Rector), who also officiated at the graveside.  The coffin was of unpolished oak with heavy brass fittings and bore the inscription:-

ALICE ELIZE EVANS,
Born August 6th, 1862
Died December 22nd, 1916

The mourners comprised:- Mr. W. A. Evans (husband), Battery Sergt. Major C. W. Evans (son), Mr. Stanley Richard Evans (son), Mrs. G. W. Martin (daughter), Miss E. B. Evans (daughter).
