Rushden Echo & Argus, 3rd March 1939, transcribed by Kay Collins
Miss Elizabeth Denton

Elizabeth Denton, who died at 5 a.m. on Wednesday at her home, No. 6, Succoth-place, Rushden, was a native and life-long resident of Rushden, and for more than 70 years had occupied the small cottage in the centre of the town. She was 82 years of age, and few veterans in the town have been more widely known. As a chorister, Temperance worker, and Liberal she lived actively until the last ten years, and her bright, frank disposition was appreciated by many acquaintances.

As a chorus contralto Miss Denton, up to middle age and even beyond, had few superiors in the town. In "Top Meeting" days she joined the choir of the Park-road Baptist Church, continuing in membership through the period in which the choir became noted for its festival successes. She was one of the first to join the Rushden Choral Society at its formation in 1918 and remained in the ranks until her health failed. She took part in the early Nonconformist Choral Festivals at Wellingborough and attended regularly for many years.

During the last few years she was seldom able to leave her home, but to the surprise of her friends she ventured out and heard the performance of "The Creation" at the Palace Cinema last December.

Very stalwart in the Temperance cause, Miss Denton was a Rechabite for most of her life, a Good Templar until the dissolution of the Rushden branch, and a worker for the Rushden Temperance Society. She was equally staunch as a member of the Rushden Women's Liberal Association.

Many of Rushden's older sportsmen recall that in her younger days Miss Denton was a most enthusiastic follower of the Town Football Club.

Miss Denton had been seriously ill since last Friday. She leaves one sister, Mrs. C. W. Horrell, of "The Laurels," Rushden.

The funeral service took place at the Park-road Baptist Church this morning (Friday).
