Lily May Darnell

In the Home-going of Miss Darnell on July 28th, Park Road has lost its oldest and most senior member.  Baptized in 1908 during the ministry of the Rev. W. F. Harris, Lily had lived through eleven successive pastorates and as a girl would have experienced the thrill of moving from the Old Top Meeting to the new Park Road Church.

From the Sunday School, graduation to the Church came through the C.E. movement which was very strong in the early years of the century.  There was also membership of Miss Williams’ Bible Class which lasted until 1942.

Always of a quiet and retiring nature, Lily’s great contribution to the Church and her Lord was in the Sunday School where she gave long years as a helper in the Beginners Department.  Then, like Dorcas of the Early Church, she will be remembered for her flair as a needle-woman, having made literally hundreds of small garments for the B.M.S., or to assist the funds for church renovation and the Highfield project in the thirties.  Diligence in practical service was equally matched by devotion to the services of worship on Sundays and week-night gatherings for fellowship.

As an unmarried member of a large family, Lily was the devoted Aunt of a host of nephews and nieces as well as keeping house for a brother for many years.

The release came at Isebrook Hospital where in increasing weakness, Miss Darnell had spent the last six of her 92 years.

The funeral service at Kettering was conducted by the Rev. John Weaver in the absence of our Minister away on holiday.

While giving thanks to god for a wonderful life we would assure the sorrowing relatives, especially the only surviving sister, Mrs. Mabel Sykes, of our very sincere sympathy in their great loss.
