Rushden Echo, 16th March 1917, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Miss Fanny Darnell

The death took place suddenly yesterday week at 120, Wellingborough-road, of Miss Fanny Darnell, at the age of 74 years. The old lady had been getting feeble for some time, but on the Tuesday prior to her death, as she was not feeling well, she managed to walk to the doctor’s by herself, and it was not suspected that her indisposition was of a serious nature. On Wednesday, however, Miss Darnell became much worse, as, although she had risen from her bed and dressed herself, the neighbours were so alarmed at her condition that they sent for her niece, Mrs. Panter, of 120, Wellingborough-road. Mrs. Panter, finding that her aunt was very ill, at once made arrangements for Miss Darnell to be conveyed to her (Mrs. Panter’s) residence, and Mr. John Claridge, J.P., C.C., kindly lent his car for that purpose. The aged lady was got to bed, and her relatives remained with her the whole of the night, but she gradually grew weaker, although retaining consciousness for some hours. Finally she passed peacefully away in her sleep at 6.15 a.m. yesterday week. The late Miss Darnell was a native of Rushden, being the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Daniel Darnell. She was a cousin of Mr. John Claridge, Mr. Claridge’s mother and Miss Darnell’s father being brother and sister. She was an enthusiastic lace maker, and only a week before her death was engaged in this, her favourite, recreation. Until increasing infirmity prevented her, Miss Darnell was a regular attendant at the Old Top Meeting. The funeral took place last Saturday afternoon at the cemetery, the obsequies being conducted by the Rev. C. J. Keeler. The coffin was of polished elm with brass fittings, and bore the inscription:-

The mourners comprised: Mr. and Mrs. J. Panter (nephew and niece), Mrs. Valentine of Moulton (niece), Mrs. W. Osborne (niece), Mrs. F. Sherwood (niece), Mr. W.
