Rushden Echo, 15th September 1916, transcribed by Kay Collins
A Former Rushden Tradesman – Death of Mr F Darby
Seized with a Stroke While Reading of a Relative’s Bereavement

A well-known and highly-respected former tradesman of Rushden passed away on Sept. 14 at Milverton Gardens, Seven Kings, Ilford, in the person of Mr Frederick Darby, aged 77.

For very many years Mr Darby carried on business in Rushden as an oil and petroleum merchant, and was well-known in Rushden and the surrounding district. The deceased gentleman, who retired from business some few years ago, was a remarkable man for his years, carrying himself with an upright bearing, and being in possession of most of his faculties. Until last Saturday week he was apparently in his usual health, but was then seized with a stroke whilst reading a telegram containing the news of the sudden death of his son’s wife’s sister. Everything possible was done for him but without avail, and the end came peacefully yesterday week.

The funeral took place at Rushden Cemetery on Monday, the coffin having been brought from London. The funeral arrangements locally were carried out by Mr T Swindall. The Rev R Shorten, of Bradford, officiated, deceased having been associated with the Rushden Independent Wesleyan Church during his residence in Rushden. The coffin bore the inscription:

Fredk. Darby
Died Sept. 14, 1916
Aged 77 years.

The mourners comprised: Mr and Mrs H H Darby (son and daughter-in-law), Driver Ray Darby, R.F.A., and Mr Walter Darby (grandsons). Messrs J Jaques, E Wrighton, and Cunnington represented the Independent Wesleyan Church, and others present were Messrs John Claridge, H Lack, G Smith, J Wilmott, and Austin.
