A Rushden Native Murdered – Shocking Tragedy in America – Father of a Famous minister

News has been received in Rushden this week to the effect that a well-known Rushden native, Mr John Cox, was foully murdered outside his house in Lonoke, U.S.A., on Shrove Tuesday. As yet no particulars are to hand as to the manner in which he was killed or was his murderer.

Mr John Cox was born in Duck-street, Rushden, about 70 years ago, in a house which has since been pulled down. His father was a native of Rushden, and so was his brother, Mr Ebenezer Cox, who is still resident in Rushden, carrying on a business as second-hand dealer in High-street.

Mr B Vorley, of Newton-road, Rushden, is a nephew of the murdered gentleman.

Many people, especially the passive resisters, will remember the visit of the Rev. Ben Cox, the son of the murdered gentleman, to Rushden about ten years ago, and the inspiring speeches and sermons he delivered in this district. This minister is a powerful orator and is well-known and well beloved in religious circles in America, and the news of his father’s death has been a great shock to him.

Mr John Cox lived for some time in Wellingborough, and went to America about 36 years ago.
