Rushden Echo, 19th July 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins

THE DEATH of Miss Ellen Ethel Cox (Nellie), aged 49, the eldest daughter of Mrs. Mary Cox and of the late Mr. Cox, of 69, Queen-street, Rushden, took place on July 4th, after a brief illness. The funeral took place on Saturday, July 6th, at the cemetery, where many friends had gathered to show their respect to the deceased. Captain Knight, of the Salvation Army, officiated in the chapel at the cemetery and also at the graveside. There were also present at the burial, assisting the Captain at the grave, Deputy Bandmaster Seamarks, and the songsters of the Corps rendered very feelingly in the chapel at the cemetery the hymn “My home is there,” a favourite song of the deceased’s. At the graveside they sang “All is well” while the coffin was lowered into the grave. The coffin bore the inscription:-

Died July 4th, 1918
Aged 49 years.

The mourners were: Mrs. Cox (mother) and Mr. Ernest Cxo (brother), Mrs. Major and Miss Ada Cox (sisters), Mrs. And Mr. Knighton (sister and brother-in-law), Mrs. And Mr. Daniels (sister and brother-in-law),Mrs. Bond and Pte. Jim Cox (sister and nephew), Mrs. Moon and Miss A. Cox (friend and niece), Mrs. A Friend and Miss F. Friend (friends). The floral tributes were inscribed: From dear Mother and Brothers and Sisters, to dear Nell; from Mr. and Mrs. Daniels; from Martha and Eddie (in Canada); from Mrs Friend, Miss L. Friend, Mrs. L. Bailey and Mrs. Fairey. Deceased was esteemed worker of the Salvation Army Corps in Rushden, having been a member for upwards of 25 years, and she held the office of “War Cry” secretary for a very long period. She became a member of the Salvation Army when they held their meetings in the Temperance Hall, Newton-road, now occupied by the British Women’s Temperance Association, and she was esteemed by all who knew her for her zeal and energy in her good work.
