The Rushden Echo, 28th March, 1913, transcribed by Jim Hollis
Death of Mr. Henry Collins
Well-Known Rushden Families Bereaved
Impressive Funeral

Much sympathy will be felt with Mrs. Henry Collins, of Crabb-street, Rushden in the loss she has sustained by the death of her husband, Mr. Henry Collins, which took place very suddenly on Sunday about 2.30 a.m. from tubercular haemorrhage. Deceased, who was 43 years of age, had been in indifferent health for the past eight years, suffering considerably from throat trouble and chronic deafness. A widow and four children remain to mourn his loss.

During the lifetime of his brother (the late Mr. Percy Collins, heel manufacturer) Mr. Henry Collins managed the business for him, and upon the death of his brother about 16 months ago, when the business was acquired by Messrs. Tailby and Putnam, he continued in the same position. As a child he passed through the Sunday school of the Park-road Baptist Church and was associated with that place of worship throughout the whole of his lifetime.

Deceased, who was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fredk. Collins, of Rushden, was a man of indomitable will and energy, and it is this fact undoubtedly that kept him at work right up to midday on Saturday, the day preceding his death. About one month ago he was compelled to spend a week in bed, but appeared to recover, and resumed his business. On Saturday evening he expressed the opinion that he felt better than he had done for some time past, and when he retired for the night nothing unusual was noticed in his appearance. About 2 o’clock on Sunday morning, however, his wife, who was in the next room, heard him rap on the wall, and proceeding to his bedroom found him in the throes of a bad attack of haemorrhage. He appeared to realise his approaching end, as he asked his wife to call the children and this she proceeded to do, but before they could reach his bedside he had expired. Dr. Davies, who was sent for, came immediately, and did all in his power to stimulate the heart’s action, but his efforts were fruitless. Deceased was a member of the Rushden and Higham Ferrers branch of the Independent Labour Party and of the Queen Victoria Lodge No. 663 Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes.
