Rushden Echo, 13th April 1923, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mr. James Clark

Obituary—With deep regret we have to record the death, which occurred on Tuesday at 37 Church-street, of Mr. James Clark, aged 80, a native and lifelong resident of Rushden. Deceased was a member of an old Rushden family, his grandfather being the only wheelwright in Rushden at one time. Mr. J. Clark, in his early days a craftsman in handsewn boot work, went to the factory of Messrs. Wm. Claridge and Sons as a foreman of the press-room, which position he held for 50 years. Associated for the greater part of his life with the Baptist cause of Rushden, the late Mr. Clark was admitted a member in 1868. From 1870 he was actively engaged in Sunday-school work, filling the offices of teacher, class leader, and superintendent. For over 30 years Mr. Clark was a deacon up to 1906, when he was made life-deacon (as differing from the triennial election). His early contemporaries were Mr. Samuel Knight, Mr. John Cave, Mr. Joseph Farey (a brother-in-law), and, still living, Mr. David Darnell. Another work which the deceased was for many years connected with was the Rushden Hospital Week Committee, on which he served as member and collector. He was "High Steward" of the (old) "Rushden Friendly Society" for 19 years up to the time when it was merged into a national society on the inauguration of the National Health Insurance Act. Deceased was out and about as recently as easter, since when he had had to keep to his bed. He leaves the widow, aged 82, who is an invalid; one son, Mr. John Clark of Alfred-street (Mr. John Clark, boot manufacturer, being a nephew); two daughters, Mrs. Timms and Mrs. Allen; four grandchildren, and a great-grandson. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Saturday)., the first part of the service being at the Park-road Baptist Church at 2p.m.
