Rushden Echo, 1st November 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins
The Late Mr T Chubb
The Funeral

The death took place on Friday morning last, after a long and painful illness, of Mr Thomas Crewes Chubb, of Ivy Cottage, Queen-street, Rushden. Deceased, who was 59 years of age, leaves a widoe, two sons, and two daughters—Mrs E J Whiteman, New Estate Wymington; Mr W A Chubb, Washbrook-road, Rushden; Mr Bert Chubb, of Northampton; and Miss Gertrude Chubb, of Rushden. Deceased, who was born in London, removed to Rushden about 18 years ago from Bedfordshire. For many years he worked for Mr R Marriott, builder, but for twelve months or so he had been in the employ of the Standard Rotary Machine Co.

He was able to work up to about last Easter, since which time he had only worked for about a couple of days. About a fortnight before his death he took to his bed and gradually he grew weaker, death taking place in the early hours of last Friday from heart disease and lead poisoning. While residing at Wellingborough he was for many years a member of St Luke’s Church choir in that town. Deceased was a member of the Rushden Working Men’s Club and the Rushden West End Club. In the summer he went to the Roden Convalescent Home, but he returned to Rushden—in August—before his time was up, as the matron there could see how ill he was. He had never been out of doors since his return.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the first portion of the obsequies taking place in St Mary’s Church. The Rector (Rev P E Robson) officiated, assisted by Mr John W E Chubb, licensed lay reader of the Fisherman’s Church, Hastings (eldest brother of the deceased). The mourners were: Mrs Chubb (widow) and Mr W A Chubb (son); Mr Bert Chubb and Mrs E J Whiteman (son and daughter); Mr J W E Chubb (brother) and Miss G Chubb (daughter); Mrs Tyler and Mrs Chris Newitt, of Wellingborough (sister-in-law and niece); Mrs Ada Cleaver, of Wellingborough (niece), and Mrs Letts (friend). Mrs W A Chubb was unable to attend the funeral on account of ill-health; Mrs Bert Chubb was unavoidably absent owing to the illness of her only child; and Pte E J Whiteman, now in the Haslar Hospital, Gosport, was unable to obtain leave.

The coffin, of polished elm, with brass fittings, bore the inscription:-

Thomas Crewes Chubb
Died October 25th 1918
Aged 59 years.

Mr Arthur Sanders was the undertaker. There were many floral tributes. A harp was inscribed as follows: “In ever-loving memory of a dear husband and father, from his sorrowing wife and children.

“Gone from suffering, toil and care,
But never from our love:
Gone to meet our darling Alwyne,
In our Father’s home above.”

Other wreaths were as follow: With deepest sympathy, from Mr and Mrs Wright and Lily. A token of sympathy, from Mr and Mrs Scholes. With deepest sympathy, from Driver and Mrs Clark. With sincere sympathy, from Mr and Mrs J R Mepham. With deepest sympathy, from Gertie Bateman.— Peace perfect Peace. In loving memory of dear Mr Chubb, from Master Ray Tansey, Higham Ferrers. From Mr And Mrs Whiteman and family, Wymington. With seepest sympathy, to our dear uncle, from Rhoda and family, Wellingborough.— R.I.P. With deepest sympathy, from Tom and Harriet (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), and Mrs Ada Cleaver (niece), Wellingboro’.

Mrs Chubb and family wish to thank the many kind friends for their expressions of sympathy in their sad bereavement, particularly the principals and staff of the Standard Rotary Machine Company for kindnesses shown during a long illness, and also the members of the Working men’s Club and the other clubs in Rushden.
