Rushden Echo, 6th April 1917, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mrs. Florence Ellen Chettle

Sudden Death At Rushden
Soldier’s Sad Bereavement While Away On Duty

The death took place suddenly on Sunday morning at 12, Ebenezer-terrace, Rushden, of Mrs. Florence Ellen Chettle, wife of Pte. Frederick Chettle, of the R.F.A., who is stationed in Ireland, and to whom information has been sent.  The deceased lady, who was 28 years of age, leaves four small children, the eldest being about six years old, and the youngest six months.

The late Mrs. Chettle went to Northampton Hospital a fortnight before Christmas, and remained there for seven weeks, during which time she underwent an operation.  She came out of the hospital about the beginning of February, but had remained an out-patient of the hospital right up to the time of her death.  On Sunday morning she got up as usual, and was seen in the yard attending to her domestic duties.

About 10.30 a.m., however, a neighbour, Mrs. Jos. Bugby, was fetched to her assistance, and entering Mrs. Chettle’s house Mrs. Bugby found that she was undoubtedly dying.  The doctor was immediately sent for, but the poor woman had expired before his arrival.  Dr. Greenfield was not able to immediately certify the cause of death, and information was sent to the coroner, but an inquest was not considered necessary.

The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at the cemetery, the Rev. P. J. Robson officiating.
