Rushden Echo and Argus, Friday 4th May 1934, transcribed by Susan Manton
Cecilia Bridget Carty
Inquest Opened on Baby
Mother who came to Rushden from Petersham
Coroner’s Court in Maternity Home

The question of a female baby’s death is to be investigated at Rushden on May 22nd, following the brief opening of an inquest last Saturday evening.

A room at the Old Rectory, High Street South, now a maternity home kept by Nurse Mather, was used by the East Northants Coroner (Mr. J. C. Parker) for Saturday’s proceedings, which were attended by Police Inspector Sharman and Police Sergeant Wright.

Nurse Annie Mather, the only witness called, said the body was that of the female child of Cecilia Bridget Carty.

The Coroner: You haven’t any idea about her home address?

Witness: No I haven’t. I was told she hadn’t got a home.

The Coroner: But she came from Park Gate, Petersham?

Witness: Yes.

The Coroner: Thank you, nurse. That is all we will trouble about today.

Afterwards the Coroner asked Nurse Mather “Did the doctor say how long she was likely to be before she would be well enough to attend?”

“About a fortnight” replied the witness.

Remarking that he expected there would be some people down from London when the inquest was resumed the Coroner announced to the Press “I will fix an adjourned inquest for the 22nd May. You will know the time and place later. The public part of the inquest is over.”

The Press then retired, but afterwards learned that the inquest will be resumed at Rushden Police Station at 2.30pm on May 22nd.
