Death of a Rushden Veteran

Mr William Campion Passes Away
Another of the veterans of Rushden, whose portraits appeared some time ago in the "Rushden Echo", has passed away, the death of Mr William Campion, in his 87th year, having to be recorded. The deceased, who was a shoemaker, was a native of Rushden, and lived in the town all his life, being very highly respected. In his earlier days he was associated with the “Top Meeting”, and at one time a singer in the Baptist choir. Subsequently he attached himself to the Independent Wesleyan Church, and, while the state of his health permitted, was a regular worshipper there.

The deceased had a seizure in the street about 14 months ago, since which time he has been in failing health. He has not been out for the last few months, and gradually became weaker, passing away very peacefully on Sunday morning at 3.30.

About 16 years ago his wife died, and since that time he has resided with one of his daughters, Mrs James Sargent, of High-street North. He leaves three daughters and two sons.

Yesterday the funeral took place, the Rev R Shorten officiating. The chief mourners were:-

Mr and Mrs James Sargent (son-in-law and daughter), Mr and Mrs William Campion (son and daughter-in-law), Mrs Allen of Wellingborough (daughter), Mr Thomas Campion, of Wigston (son), Mrs John Campion (sister-in-law), Mrs Farey and Mr Samuel Campion, of Wellingborough (niece and nephew), Mrs Bettles and Mrs Ashford (granddaughters), Mrs Stokes, of Burton Latimer (niece).
