Rushden Echo, 1st January 1915, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mrs Elizabeth Ellen Burton

Obituary—We regret to record the death, which took place suddenly on Tuesday morning at 47, Victoria-road, of Mrs Elizabeth Ellen Burton, at the age of 48 years. Until midday on Monday the deceased lady was apparently in her usual health and was able to go about her household duties. After having partaken of her dinner she complained to her family of feeling unwell, and fainted. The usual restoratives were applied, and Mrs Burton regained unconsciousness and was able to continue her work, being alone in the house during the afternoon. When her daughter came home at 4 o’clock Mrs Burton seemed no worse and was preparing the tea. She complained, however, of feeling giddy. Nothing serious was then feared, and the daughter, after having tea, returned to her work. At 5 o’clock the milk man, Mr A Abbott, knocked at the back door but received no reply, and hearing someone moaning he called the next door neighbour, who, entering the house, found Mrs Burton lying on the couch unable to speak, and completely paralysed. She was only just conscious. Dr Davies was sent for and came at once. He ordered the sufferer to be kept quiet, but did not then appear to regard the illness as likely to prove fatal. Mrs Burton, however, must have had another stroke during the night, as she passed away at 8.30a.m. on Tuesday without having regained consciousness. Death was due to apoplexy. The deceased leaves a husband, two sons, and one daughter, to mourn their loss. A native of Rushden, she was well-known throughout the town and district, and has been for many years a member of Succoth Baptist Chapel, taking an active interest in the work of that place of worship. She was a sister of Mr W Desborough, of Rushden. A kind and affectionate mother, she will be greatly missed by her family. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2.15 at the cemetery.
