Rushden Echo, 23rd June 1922, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mr John Robshaw Brooke
Rushden Tradesman’s Death

Sudden demise of Mr Robshaw Brooke – A Keen Sportsman

With deep regret we have to record the death which took place with painful suddenness at 3.30a.m. on Wednesday, of Mr John Robshaw Brooke, pawnbroker, High-street, Rushden.

Mr Brooke, who celebrated his 45th birthday last Monday, had suffered for a number of years from heart trouble, and had been under the care of Dr Greenfield and Dr Davies. The deceased underwent an operation a year or two ago and this proved successful for another trouble. He also had a course of treatment at intervals at a nursing home, from which he derived some benefit. Mr Brooke seemed as usual on Tuesday when he locked up the premises for the night. After he had been in bed an hour or so he suddenly became ill, and before Dr Davies (for whom Mrs Brooke sent) could arrive, Mr Brooke had passed away.

Mr and Mrs Robshaw Brooke had managed the business of pawnbrokers for Mr Beaverstock since 1904, and about three years ago they took over the business themselves. Mr Brooke was an official and keen supporter of the Rushden town Thursday Football Club, rarely missing any of their matches. He also took a great interest in boxing and other sports promoted in the town. His death is greatly lamented by all sportsmen and other friends in the district, and much sympathy is felt with Mrs Brooke in her sad and sudden bereavement.

Mrs Brooke and family wish to thank all friends for their sympathy in their sad and heavy bereavement.
