Wellingborough News, 27th May 1882, transcribed by Kay Collins

A PAUPER FUNERAL—A correspondent writes us as follows:—On Monday afternoon I witnessed a funeral at Rushden. The corpse was brought in a hearse from the Wellingborough Workhouse, and when it arrived at the Church gates at 4.30, there were four men in their working clothes to carry it to the Church, and I thought what a shameful and disgraceful way it was to bury the dead. When, the corpse was at the grave and was being placed in, it was discovered that the grave was too short, so after a little consideration the coffin was again taken to the Church till the grave was enlarged. The name of the deceased was Abraham Ball, but the initials only were on the coffin, viz., A. B., aged 60.

Note: He appears not to have been registered in the Workhouse Deaths.
