The Rushden Echo and Argus, 5th June, 1942, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. B. A. Baker, Rushden

The last of five brothers, all of whom lived to be over eighty, Mr. Benjamin Arnold Baker, of 41, Pratt-road, Rushden, passed away on Saturday morning after three months’ illness. Aged 84, he had been a currier all his life and had remained at work with Messrs. Charles Sanders, of Duck-street, right up to his illness. Born at Rectory Farm, being a member of a very old Rushden family, he took a lifelong interest in the affairs of St. Mary’s Church. He and his brothers were all bell-ringers and were young men in the church at the time of Canon Barker. Mr. Baker was also well-known in those days for his interest in cricket – he was a member of the village team.

One daughter and one son survive, Mrs. Baker having died eight years ago.

The funeral took place on Monday, the service at the house being conducted by the Rector of Rushden (the Rev. E. A. Green) in the presence of the following mourners: Mrs. E. M. Danby and Mr. W. Danby (daughter and grandson), Mr. E. Baker and Mrs. Weekley (nephew and niece), Mr. S. Baker and Mrs. M. Neville (nephew and niece), Miss M. Hazeldine and Mr. Whitworth (niece and friend).

Wreaths were as follows: To my dear father, from Edith – So pure in faith, in thought and speech, and acts that faith shall own, So shall he too Thy presence reach, and know as he was known; To dear Father, from Ernest and Dorothy, Australia – The life you led, dear, is a grand monument; To dear Grandfather from his grandsons, Don, Billy and Clem – The greatest man we ever knew; From Aunt Polly and May – At rest; From the neighbours – Peace, perfect peace; From his Spiritualist friends, Crabb-street; Mr. and Mrs. Fairey, Pratt-road; From Nance and family; Fellow workers, Chas. Sanders, Ltd.; From Chas. Sanders, Ltd., to Ben.

Messrs. Whittington and Tomlin were the undertakers.
