Rushden has lost a much respected and honoured old townsman in the person of Mr. James Bailey, late of High-street South. The deceased, who was 67 years of age, had lived in Rushden practically all his life and had been a gardener at Rushden Hall for about 46 years. His kindly disposition and quiet unassuming ways made him a favourite with all with whom he came in contact. Deceased was one of the bell ringers at St. Mary’s Church for a considerable time.
About a month or so ago the deceased had a fall and had only been at work a few weeks when he contracted chronic bronchitis and within a week the end came very peacefully.
The Funeral
took place on Wednesday afternoon at Rushden cemetery. Several flags were at half-mast and a muffled peal was rung on the bells at the Parish Church. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. E. F. Braley. Many sympathetic friends were present to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed.
The coffin, which was of polished elm, bore the following inscription
JAMES BAILEY
Died March 23rd 1913
Aged 67 years.
Messrs. Whittington and Tomlin made the funeral arrangements.
The mourners were: Mrs. J. Bailey (widow) and Mr. C. Bailey (son), Mrs. E. Corby (daughter) and Mr. J. Bailey (son), Mrs. L. Cross (daughter) and Mr. F. Corby (son-in-law), Mrs. E. Baldry (daughter) and Mr. F. Cross (son-in-law), Mrs. F. Sherwood (niece) and Mrs. C. Bailey (daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. T. Pinnock (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. J. Chaplin, Kettering (nephew and niece), Miss F. Bailey (granddaughter) and Mrs. W. Chaplin (sister-in-law), Mrs. A. West and Mrs. W. Brown (nieces). The following bell ringers also followed:- Messrs. H. Clayton, F. Clayton, A. Chapman, F. Chapman, G. Burton, and W. Hall.
