Rushden Echo, 18th September 1914, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Death of Mr. Arthur Ashby
A Well-Known Rushden Resident

With deep regret we record the death, which took place on Monday morning at Boscombe House, Rushden, where the family had been temporarily residing, of Mr. Arthur Charles Ashby, at the age of 57 years. The deceased gentleman, who had had a lingering illness of practically twelve months’ duration, was well-known and highly respected, being the oldest tradesman in Rushden. He was born in Higham Ferrers, where his father, the late Mr. Charles Flexton Ashby, was engaged in business as a tailor. Remaining with his father until he was 21 years of age, he then entered the employ of Mr. Talbot, tailor, Thrapston, with a view to widening his experience. He subsequently commenced business in Rushden on his own account in 1884, and by inherent business acumen and energy soon secured a lucrative and well-established footing in the town and district as tailor and outfitter.

His great hobby was conjuring, and by his accomplishments in this direction he was able to entertain many thousands of people during his lifetime. Until his health began to fail he was a regular attendant at the Park-road Baptist Church. Himself a staunch total abstainer, he took a keen interest in temperance advocacy, and although not a public speaker, assisted, in various ways, local temperance organisations. In politics he was a Liberal. He leaves a widow, one son, and two daughters to mourn their loss. Mrs. Ashby is one of the Rushden representatives on the Wellingborough Board of Guardians.
