John Pogson - Obituary 1945

Mr. John Pogson, well-known as choirmaster of the Wellingborough Road Mission Church, Rushden, and holder of many other offices there, passed away last Friday after two years' illness. Aged 61 years, he was a native of Rushden. and lived at 116, St. Margarets Avenue. A widow is left; there are no children.

From 1905 to 1930 Mr. Pogson was deputy choirmaster at the church, and from then until his death he was choirmaster. At various times he had filled the annual offices as president and secretary, last being president in 1944. For 23 years he was a member of the Mission Band and for several years bandmaster. He was secretary of the Oddfellows Friendly Society for 19 years.

Mr. Pogson was employed in the Finishing Department of Messrs. John White's Shirley-road factory until his illness.

The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, and the service was held at the Wellingborough Road Mission Church. The Rev. J. Jacques officiated and spoke of Mr. Pogson's loyalty to the church. The choir was present, and the hymns were "Jesu, Lover of my Soul" and "Give me the wings of faith to rise". Mr. W. J. F. Tassell was the organist.

Mourners were: Mrs. M. Pogson (widow), Mr. S. Martin (brother), Mr. and Mrs. G. Pogson (brother and sister-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. W. Hills (brother-in-law and sister), Mrs. C. Coleman, Mr. C. Pogson, Miss V. Martin (nephew and nieces), Mrs. F. Carpenter and Mrs. E. Pratt (cousins), Mr. B. Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. A. Lincoln (uncles and aunt), Mr. and Mrs. F. Watts, Mr. and Mrs. Astles, Mr. and Mrs. A Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. F. Lincoln (cousins), Mr. and Mrs. G. Miller (friends), Miss K. Gale, Sergt. Langford, Sergt. Woods and Sergt. Ransom (friends of the U.S.A.A.F.), Mr. D.Young (secretary of the Mission Choir), Mr. A. Underwood (president of the Mission Church), Mrs. L. Bandey (W.A secretary), and Mrs. A Cross (friend).

Wreaths included those sent by the Church and Choir, Messrs. John White's Shirley Road factory, and the neighbours.

Mr. L. Clark was the undertaker.
