Rushden Echo, Friday, December 21, 1928, transcribed by John Collins

Mr. William George Lynn

Former Rushden Man - Expires at Motor Wheel

The death with unexpected suddenness took place at the wheel of the car he was driving yesterday week, of Mr. William George Lynn, garage proprietor, of Selborne-place, Hove, and formerly of Rushden. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn lived at Rushden for 14 years, and they left here 14 years ago. Deceased was 59 years of age.

In the Hove and Brighton district Mr. Lynn was a much respected owner-driver of a car, known to many theatre parties, holiday makers, etc. Yesterday week Mr. Lynn was driving Major Holland at Hove when he suddenly collapsed. With great presence of mind he stopped the engine, but when Major Holland got out of the car to attend to the driver he found that Mr. Lynn had passed away. But for the shutting off of the engine—probably Mr. Lynn’s last conscious act in this life—a disaster might have occurred to the car.

An inquest was held last Saturday. The deceased leaves a widow and a married daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn’s only son, Mr. Nelson Lynn was killed in the war.

The funeral took place at All Saints’ Church and the cemetery, Hove. In the absence, through illness, of Canon de Chair, one of Mr. Lynn’s customers, the service was conducted by the Curate (the Rev. H. A. West). [List of mourners and wreaths follows]

Rushden Echo, Jan 4th 1929

Funeral of former Rushden Man - Died At The Wheel

Rarely has there been such a wide and sincere of expression of sympathy as that which has followed the death of Mr. William George Lynn, the well-known garage proprietor, 3, Selbourne-place, Hove, and formerly of Rushden. Mr Lynn, it will be recalled, passed away under tragic circumstances, dying at the wheel of the car he was driving. He was aged 59 years.

There was forthcoming at the funeral much evidence of respect and sympathy. A large number of sympathisers attended the service at All Saints’ Church, Hove, while the floral tributes made an extensive and beautiful array.

A Popular Figure

In Brighton and Hove Mr Lynn's demise has been received with the profoundest regret, for possibly there was no better known owner-driver in both towns. A popular figure, he had for many years served tor wedding parties, theatres, and country drives. There were few in the district who did not know him, and all admired and respected him.

Canon de Chair, who was one of Mr Lynn's customers, was to have conducted the service, but he was prevented through illness. The Rev. H. A. West (Curate) officiated in his stead, also being present at the interment in Hove cemetery.

The chief morners were the widow, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Cooper (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. and Mrs. Lynn (brother and sister-in-law), Mr. and Mr. W. Lynn (brother and sister-in-law), Mr. A. Painter and Mr. A. Patterson (nephews).
