Death of Mr. Samuel Knight
of Rushden

Home Close
Sketch by ALS of the cottage in Home Close
We have to record the death of the oldest inhabitant of Rushden, which took place on Saturday evening just before midnight. Mr. Samuel Knight, of Skinner’s Hill, had reached the age of 94 years, 93 of which had been lived in the same house. This house was one of the remains of old Rushden, having been connected with Mr. Knight’s family for two or three hundred years, and the deceased was carried there when twelve months of age. He was a carpenter and builder by trade, and was, of course, one of the oldest tradesmen of the town. He retired from business, however, some fifteen years ago, and for the last year or two had been in feeble health. His last public appearance was at the stone-laying of the new Baptist Church in Park-road, eighteen months ago, when he delivered a touching address. He joined the Old Baptist Church so long ago as 1833, and was a deacon of the church for over half a century, succeeding his father, who had filled the position for 34 years, his grandfather having also filled the deaconote for several years. He took an active interest in everything connected with the church, and was also connected with the Temperance Society. He was able to leave his room as late as Tuesday of last week, but then gradually sank, and passed away as already stated. The funeral takes place on Wednesday afternoon in the burial ground of the Old Baptist Chapel, at three o’clock.
