It is with deep regret that we record the death of Arthur, one of Rushden’s most well-known residents. Although born at Earls Barton railway station, after his family moved to Irthlingborough his early years were spent at Irthlingborough Station. He always spoke fondly of his boyhood days there and also derived much pleasure from commenting on the film "The Battle of Waterloo", the landing of a monoplane and being able to film Mr Hore-Belisha opening the new Irthlingborough Bridge in the 1930s. Arthur received a camera for his eleventh birthday and he had therefore already developed a keen interest in photography before he came to live in Rushden where he worked from his home in Washbrook Road.  His work covered both commercial and private commissions, but he also extended it to include his own record of life in the town.  Photographs of local scenes and cine film of carnival processions formed only a small part of this record.  Many of his pictures formed the basis for postcards and others appeared in various publications. Not only was Arthur a valued member of this Society, regularly attending our monthly meetings until quite recently, but he was also a member of St Peter’s History Society in Irthlingborough and a founder member of the Northamptonshire Film Archive Trust. However, it was due to his determination to save Rushden Hall from demolition that, in 1966, together with Jane Young and Clive Wood, he founded the Rushden Amenities Society. With a lot of hard work the Hall was saved and continues to provide not only a site for social and leisure occasions, but will remain a constant, tangible reminder of those whose enthusiasm for the heritage of the town has enabled it to retain some of its history and landmarks. Arthur will be sadly missed by his many friends and we extend our sincere condolences to his family.
