Harvey Britten - 1999

BRITTEN — Harvey, died suddenly but peacefully, after a short but courageous fight against cancer, in Bedford South Wing Hospital, on December 25th, 1999, aged 69 years. Much loved father of Paul and husband of Patricia. Formerly the chief flying instructor at The College of Aeronautics, Cranfield. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends and 'students'. Funeral service at Cranfield Parish Church, on Thursday January 6th, at 12.15pm. Family flowers only please, donations if desired for The Cancer Research Fund, may be sent to E. Fennemore & Son, 34 George Street Bletchley, Milton Keynes.

Harvey Britten was born in 1930 and he lived next door to Rectory Farm in Newton Road, Rushden. Later the family moved to Westfield Avenue.

After leaving school Harvey became a metal pattern maker at Morris Motors foundary at Wellingborough. He joined the Air Scouts and was a keen aero modeller.

Harvey began his flying career with gliding at Podington airfield, and then he learnt to fly powered aircraft at Sywell and soon gained his 'Private Pilot Licence'.

In 1965 he took a trip to France and Switzerland, with fellow pilot Reg Russell. His enthusiasm for flying eventually led him to train as an instructor, part-time at Sywell airfield. He taught many local people to fly there, and then he got a full-time position at Cranfield College of Aeronautics, where he eventually became Chief Flying Instructor.
