Rushden Echo, 11th October 1940, transcribed by Kay Collins
Newell – Drage

Two teachers of the Sunday School were united in marriage at the Rushden Park-road Baptist Church on Saturday. They were Mr Robert Newell, elder son of Mr and Mrs A Newell, “Yallourn”, Blinco-road, Rushden, and Miss Margaret Joan Drage, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs A Drage, 6, Robinson-road, Rushden. Both are active members of the Baptist Church, and the bride is a lieutenant in the G.L.B.

The church was decorated with pink chrysanthemums and fern, and the ceremony was conducted by the Rev R Percy Jones.

Given away by her father, the bride wore a gown of ivory embossed chenille velvet with tulle veil and headdress of velvet flowers, and silver shoes. She carried a shower bouquet of pink roses, white heather and trailing fern, and her pearls were a gift from the bridegroom.

In attendance were Miss Freda E Drage (sister of the bride) and Miss Lily M Newell (sister of the bridegroom). They had gowns of white embroidered French shadow lace with blue mo’re sashes, blue gloves and floral headdresses to match, and silver shoes. Shower bouquets of pink carnations and trailing fern were carried, and both attendants wore pearls given by the bridegroom. Mr Frederick A Newell, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.

Mr W Cyril Groom, A.R.C.O., played the organ, and the hymns were “In heavenly love abiding” and “O happy home.”

The reception took place in the choir vestry and the honeymoon was spent in Bedfordshire, the bride travelling in a green tweed two-piece, green hat, black accessories and fox fur.

Wedding presents included a Westminster chime clock from the directors of Messrs John Cave and Sons Ltd, the bride’s employers, a barometer from the staff, pastry forks from teachers of the Beginners’ Dept., Jacobean glasses from the G.L.B., a clock from the clicking department of Messrs Bignell’s Ltd., Kettering, and a cut glass cress dish from the staff of the same firm.
