From the ATC, Peter joined the RAF and completed his war service as a bomber pilot in the Far East.

He ditched in June 1945 into a Burmese rice paddy having been hit by Japanese naval flak. His war ended in an Indian hospital prior to repatriation. 

This photo shows him as adjutant at RAF Podington lounging on the station commander's car in front of the offices.

These offices remain standing, but only just !

Rushden Echo, 28th January 1944, transcribed by Peter Brown

COMMISSION - Peter Miles younger son of Mr and Mrs H Miles, of 35, Denmark-road, Rushden, who, as reported last week, received his wings and promotion to Sergeant-Pilot in the R.A.F. in Texas, U.S.A., has now been made a Pilot Officer and has been transferred to Canada. PO Miles attended the Newton-road and Intermediate schools and belonged to the 1st Rushden Boy Scouts. He afterwards worked for the Rushden Electric Supply Co., and became a Flight Sergeant in the A.T.C., joining the R.A.F. 15 months ago.
