Mrs. Gladys Marriott
Mrs. Gladys Marriott, who has been a member of Rushden Urban Council for the past twelve years and has served on all its committees, is particularly concerned that more playing field equipment should be provided in the town.

Mrs. Marriott, who lives at Slade House, Wellingborough Road, Rushden, travels abroad each year, and makes a point of looking at the equipment provided for children.

She has come to the conclusion that there is a great need for more equipment at Rushden. She told the “Echo” that she felt good playground equipment was available, and that its provision need not be a very expensive item for the council.

Mrs. Marriott is also concerned for the welfare of the more elderly and the provision of accommodation for the elderly. Each year she arranges an informal get-together and tea party for pensioners in the North Ward at her own home.

She is chairman of the North Ward Senior Citizens’ Committee, which brings her further in touch with the pensioners.

Mrs. Marriott is chairman of the Parks’ Committee and was council chairman for 1960-61.

She is a governor of Wellingborough High School and Wellingborough Grammar School and a manager of Rushden Primary Schools.

She was a teacher for six years before her marriage, and finds that her training is very helpful in her capacity as Governor and manager of local schools.

She is also a Governor of the Rushden Boot and Shoe School.

Mrs. Marriott was born at Dean, in Huntingdonshire, and married Mr. George Marriott in 1932. She has three children and five grandchildren.

She is a founder member of Rushden Inner Wheel and was president of the organisation in 1949.

A keen sportswoman, Mrs. Marriott played in the first eleven hockey team for her school as a girl, and also for Rushden and Higham Ferrers hockey team, when she was first married.

She is now a member of the Rushden and District Golf Club, and was captain of the women’s section in 1948 and 1949. She still plays for the first team.

An active member of St. Peter’s Church, she has served on the church council for many years.

Before her marriage she was captain of a Girl Guide troop, and she retains an active interest in the movement.
