Mantle Family

Joseph Mantle was born at Bythorn, son of John, about 1820. He was in Rushden by 1844 when he married Jane Holton (born Tingewick BKM). They had 4 children, Samuel in 1846, William in 1848, John in 1852 and Sarah Jane in 1858. In 1891 they were living in Alfred Street. Joseph died in 1895 aged 76, and Jane died in 1910 aged 90. They were buried in Rushden Cemetery Graves B281/282.

Samuel Mantle married Emma Jones, of Irchester, in 1868. They lived in Denton's Row and had 8 children, Arthur, Emily, Amelia, John E, Jane (died in 1894 aged 11), Amelia, and Ethel. Samuel died in 1922 and Emma died in 1928. They were buried in Rushden Cemetery Grave B722.

Arthur Mantle was born in 1868, and he married Charlotte Barker, of Riseley, in 1894. Arthur became the School Attendance Officer for Rushden, and was much respected in the town. They had a son Howard Arthur in 1897, and two daughters, Doris 1899 and Ada 1903. Arthur Mantle was also a noted artist. He died in 1926 aged 58, and ws buried in Rushden Cemetery Grave C245, on 30th July 1926. Charlotte was buried in the same grave on 13th May 1954 aged 83. His son Howard was killed in WWI.
