People's choices are honoured in county

A NUMBER of Northamptonshire residents have been commended in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The list, published on Saturday, includes more than 400 nominations made by members of the public.

Rushden driving instructor Ellen Inwood, who specialises in teaching people with disabilities to drive, will receive an MBE.

The 56-year-old mum said she was "very overwhelmed" by the award.

She said: "I do not know who put my name forward, I have lived in the Rushden area all my life and local people are very loyal.

"Being a driving instructor is just a way of life for me. I just do it because it is very satisfying. I do not look at people with disabilities or treat them any different - it's just a pleasure to help."

DRIVING instructor Ellen Inwood, who runs Rushden School of Motoring with her husband Graham, received the MBE for services to the disabled.

She has opened up a whole new world of freedom for disabled people by teaching them to drive. Mrs Inwood, of Hall Avenue, Rushden, said: "They tell me they have gained their freedom through being able to drive.

"Over the years I have taught people with all sorts of problems, from minor disabilities to the quite severe."

Mrs Inwood has been a registered driving instructor for 27 years and for the past 10 has specialised in teaching people with disabilities and special needs.
