Rushden Echo, 11th August 1944, transcribed by Peter Brown
Golden Wedding of Mr and Mrs J L Hart
Church Workers for 50 Years
Many members of St Peter’s Church were among the friends who on Tuesday visited Mr and Mrs Joseph Lewis Hart, of 108, Washbrook-road, Rushden, to congratulate them on their golden wedding anniversary. They found the couple in excellent health and learned that Mrs Hart was also celebrating her 73rd birthday.

Mr and Mrs Hart were married in the parish church at Bromham, Beds., which was the bride's native place, the bridegroom hailing from Stevington, two miles away. Mr. Hart had recently learned shoemaking, and that was why they moved immediately to Rushden, where the trade was flourishing.

Employed first by Mr Amos Wright and later at the C.W.S. factory, Mr Hart retired eight years ago. With his wife he was among the original members of St. Peter's Church when the separate parish was established. He has been a faithful and useful bass singer in the choir for nearly 50 years, and he still plays bowls very regularly as a member of the Spencer Park club, also keeping an allotment. His age is 76.

Before marriage Mrs Hart (nee Carrie Gardener) was a teacher at St. Paul's Infant School, Bedford, and then at Bromham. She is a former teacher of St. Peter's Sunday School and has been a member of the Mothers' Union from its formation. For several years she kept a shop at her present residence.

Mrs Hart confesses that she used to think Rushden "a funny place." One thing she disliked in the early days was that the women seemed to have little leisure, but were continually running about carrying shoes between the workshops and the factories.

Mr and Mrs Hart have three children and three grandchildren. The children are Mrs F. W Dowling, of Southwick, near Brighton, Mr Percy Hart, of Westerham, Kent, and Mr Wilfred Hart, of Rushden, who is serving in the Army.
