The Rushden Echo and Argus, 13th August, 1943, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Hardwick

Golden Wedding Celebration

A happy gathering of friends and relatives collected at 25, Pratt-road, Rushden, on Sunday to wish “all the best” to Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Hardwick, who were giving a party on the occasion of their golden wedding.

On August 7th, 1893, at Cogenhoe Church, Mr. Jabez George Hardwick, of Easton Maudit, married Miss Isabella Higgs, of Grantham, and from that time the couple have made their home in Rushden – for a short time in Queen-street and then in Pratt-road.

Mr. Hardwick, in splendid health for his 73 years, is now working as a boot viewer. From leaving school to the closing down of the firm, he was employed by Messrs. Ebenezer Claridge, of Rectory-road, afterwards keeping his own boot and shoe repair business.

A lover of gardening, he exhibited at flower shows for many years and still manages 20 poles of allotment ground. He is a member of the Conservative Club.

Mrs. Hardwick, now 69 years old, had for five years before her marriage been a maid in London to Lady Gunning, who, being a Northamptonshire lady always insisted on maids from Northants. To-day Mrs. Hardwick is a member of the Mothers’ Union of St. Mary’s Church.

The couple have one son and one daughter, Mr. S. G. Hardwick, who keeps a boot shop in Nottingham, and Mrs. Edith Dickens, and three grandchildren. For their party on Sunday a niece made them a cake.
