Rushden Echo & Argus, 22nd March 1929, transcribed by Kay Collins

Mr and Mrs John Greaves
Diamond Wedding

We offer our heartiest congratulations to Mr and Mrs John Greaves, of 32 Washbrook-road, Rushden, who celebrated the 60th anniversary of their wedding on Sunday. Mr and Mrs Greaves received the following telegram from the Queen on Sunday:-
“The Queen sincerely congratulates you on your diamond wedding which you are celebrating today, and knows that the King would wish to join in sending you sincere congratulations on this great anniversary in your lives,” signed, Private Secretary.

The old couple, who are both 79 years of age, were married at Marske-by-sea by the Rev Thomas Robinson, who also christened their seven children. Of these only two now survive. One son, Mr John Emerson Greaves, of Moor-road, Rushden, died a few weeks ago. Mr Greaves, who hails form the Cleveland district of Yorkshire, commenced work in the pits at the age of eight, and after spending three years in America came to Rushden in 1884 when he entered the boot trade. He enlisted in the Coldstream Guards early in life, but remained on the roll for only a few weeks.

There are fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Both Mr and Mrs Greaves enjoy the best of health, and, despite his years, Mr Greaves still carries on in the shoe factory.
