Mr. A. Gramshaw finds ....

An Interesting Find—Mr. A. Gramshaw, of Rushden, recently purchased at a sale a strong safe, for which, however, there was no key. Mr. Gramshaw instructed Mr. R. H. Carter, ironmonger, to make a key for the safe, and when it was unlocked a number of documents were found in it.

The papers included a share certificate for ten shares of £10 each in the Italian Coal and Iron Co., made out in the name of Charles Bradlaugh, of 12 St Helen’s-place, Bishopsgate-street, E.C.; a lease to work minerals on 354 acres of land in Merionethshire; a number of cheques for many thousands of rupees on the Oriental Bank Corporation, Calcutta (one for 7802 rupees and another for 7000), which had not been passed through the bank; one bill drawn for 10,000 rupees and another for 5,000, neither of them signed; and a number of cheques for large amounts, which had passed through the bank. Among the papers was a letter from a firm undertaking to pay to the addressee £1,000 in the event of the firm contracting for a certain railway, the amount to paid on the signing of the contract, “in consideration of your trouble and outlay in the matter.” We understand the documents are of no financial value.
