| WEDDING – A very pretty wedding took place at the Old Baptist Chapel on Monday morning last, when Mr. Herbert Samuel Gates, third son of Mr. Thos. Gates, Upper Holloway, was married to Miss Jennie Storey, third daughter of the late Mr. Robert Storey, of Castle Bolton. The chapel was filled by relatives and friends and the general public, considerable interest being taken in the ceremony, the bride being a favourite with all who knew her. Previous to the entry of the wedding party, Miss Tailby, the organist, played several voluntaries. The officiating minister was the pastor of the chapel, Rev. W. J. Tomkins. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr. Samuel Chettle, was attired in a cream cashmere dress trimmed with moiré chiffon, and orange blossom, while her hat was of cream edelweiss lace, trimmed with tips and orange blossom, and she also carried a beautiful shower bouquet of tuberoses, lily of the valley, and narcissus, the gift of the bridegroom. She was accompanied by two bridesmaids, viz., Miss Clara Bayes and Miss Theresa Howard, Weybridge, cousin of the bridegroom. Miss Bayes’ dress was cream serge trimmed with braid and satin ribbon, chip hat to match; Miss Howard, cream crepon and large straw hat trimmed with satin ribbon, both bridesmaids carrying bouquets of choice flowers the gift of the bridegroom; Mr. Stephen Chettle acting as best man.
During the course of the service the hymns “The voice that breathed o’er Eden” and “O love divine and golden” were sung by the congregation, and at the conclusion of the ceremony the party adjourned to the vestry to sign the register; after which, to the strains of Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March,” the happy pair left the chapel, their exit being greeted with the customary showers of rice by those gathered round the doors. Subsequently Mr. and Mrs. Gates left Rushden by the 5.29 train for London, the bride’s travelling costume being a small brown check, with cape to match, trimmed with chine silk, and a small brown hat. The bride was the recipient of many useful and valuable presents, being closely connected with the Old Baptist Church as a member, chorister, and Sunday School teacher.
