Lilian Butler
Honour at Northampton Festival

The Service of Thanksgiving at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Northampton, in June was attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales and a number of guests. Among them was Mrs Lilian Butler of Rushden who had won a poetry competition which was organised by BBC Radio Northampton. Competitors were asked to compose verse in the style of another poet. Mrs Butler chose Sir John Betjeman and wrote about the Diary of Northampton's Charter.

be present at the festival service.

Here among Pipewell's Abbey hillocks
Richard's horsemen kicked up divots.
Here, where only the historian looks
For subject matter for his books;
Came the new King, lion-hearted,
Needing funds ere he departed.
This prince had waited, the whole year through,
To share his hopes with soldiers, who
Expected this accession year
In crusade armour to appear.
Came Northampton's businessmen,
Knowing he coveted Jerusalem.
These burgesses, had no desire
To crusade but did aspire
To have their belov'd town with a charter,
So with their King prepared to barter.
Richard readily gave assent:
'For six score pounds as yearly rent
You will have power to elect a reeve.
When Northampton Town you needs must leave,
No roll in other towns you'll have to pay.
If the Royal Household comes to stay,
No longer can the hangers on at court
Demand of you free bed and board.
In your own town, you can plead your cause
When accused of breaking laws.
And "trial by battle" will be banned.'
So the suppliants gained all they'd planned.
They experienced no disappointment.
They had a charter, by Royal Appointment!
