The Rushden Echo & Argus had a children's corner, edited by 'Cousin Claude', and during the war they had a Guild of Goodwill, which Ruth also joined. The 'Girl's Own' started a National Savings campaign to encourage their readers to buy National Savings Certificates, and the money was used by the government for the war effort. Ruth had saved for 18 certificates by the end of the war.

After working for a time in a shoe factory, Ruth worked at the Electricity Board shop in High Street for much of her working life.
