Ernest Ashton's birthday card
A Rushden Postcard
My grandfather was Ernest Ashton and the card was sent to him on his 18th birthday. Ernest actually lived in Odell at that time but his girlfriend (later to become his wife) Annie Mole lived in Thrift Cottages in Rushden.
The card was sent to him by Annie's mother Harriet Mole. The amusing thing is that Ernest was obviously staying at their house in Rushden at the time as the address is Thrift Cottages, Rushden.  So Harriet must have posted the card to her own house. It was postmarked Rushden, so it wasn't as if she was away at the time!
They had great faith in the postal system in those days. It got there on time and was only sent the day before. I would think at that time local post was extracted and did not leave the town to be sorted!
