An exceptionally pretty marriage was solemnised at St. Peter’s Church, Cranley-gardens, London, S.W., on Wednesday afternoon, the bridegroom being Mr Francis Joseph Simpson, solicitor and Deputy Town Clerk of the borough of Higham Ferrers, second son of Mr William Hirst Simpson, CC, Clerk to the Wellingborough Justices and Town Clerk of Higham Ferrers, and his bride Miss Alice Maude Browning eldest daughter of Mr Edward Campbell Browning, of Knuston Hall, and of 70, Onslow-gardens, London, S.W. The liveliest public interest was evinced in the happy event, and the ceremony was witnessed by a representative company of relatives and town and country friends. The interior of the sacred edifice was daintily adorned with choice exotics and flowers, supplied by Messrs Wills and Segar, of Brompton-road. The officiating clergy were the Rev. E. W. Thomas, Vicar of Irchester, and the Rev. W. R. Morse, Rector of Rushden, assisted by the Rev. T. K. Sopwith, Curate of St. Peter’s, Cranley-gardens. The service was fully choral, the hymns sung by the choristers, bridal party, and congregation being “The voice that breathed o’er Eden,” “Oh, perfect love, all human thought transcending,” and “The Church’s one Foundation.” The central figure of the gay bevy of ladies in attendance was the charming bride, surrounded by her bridesmaids, the Misses Mary Browning, Rosa Browning, Ethel Browning, Mabel Browning, and Miss Jenny K. Simpson; whilst the bridegroom had the support of Mr F. Lionel Provis, son of the esteemed Secretary to the Local Government Board, who officiated as best man. The bride, who was given away by her father, was apparelled in a really lovely dress of white mousseline de soie, the skirt being of pleated mousseline trimmed with an application of lace embroidered in silver and tiny roses of satin. The bodice was of pleated mousseline de soie arranged with a little jacket of the embroidery held in at the waist with a silver belt, and fastened with a trail of orange blossoms which fell to the bottom of the skirt. The Court train of rich white satin fell from under a collar of lovely embroidery. She also wore a tiara of orange blossom and plain tulle veil, and carried a magnificent bouquet of white blooms. The dresses worn by the bridesmaids were white satin underskirts with embroidered lace covers, fichu of embroidered lace, white crinoline hats trimmed with gathered chiffon, feathers, and pink carnations under the brims, and to each the bridegroom had presented a pearl brooch representing in design a spray of heather set in a gold bar, as well as shower bouquets of pink carnations and lilies of the valley. At the close of the service, during the signing of the register in the vestry, and as the bridal party were leaving the church. The organist (Mr Herbert Hodge) played the Bridal March from “Lohengrin” (Wagner), and the Wedding March by Mendelssohn. A reception was held at the London residence of the bride’s parents, and later in the afternoon the happy couple travelled to the Isle of Wight, where the honeymoon is being spent.
