Viewpoint at Rushden Lakes
Great War Hero Honoured

The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire - working with the Rushden Branch of the RBL and Rushden Town Council - have recognised World War I Hero Lieutenant Colonel The Reverend Bernard William Vann VC, who was born on 9 July 1887 in Rushden. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for heroic deeds on 29th September 1918, having been killed in action on 3rd October 1918. (The VC is the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth Forces.) In 2016 a street was named in his honour.

The Viewpoint is on the 1 mile wheelchair/pushchair friendly Nature Trail path around Skew Bridge Lake looking south towards Rushden. A picture of the A2 size sign is shown above. Bernard Vann is still today, one of the most highly decorated officers of the British Army, having also been awarded the French Croix de Guerre avec palme and the Military Cross & Bar; the Bar signifies a second Military Cross being awarded.
