Swimming Pool
St John's building & Swimming Pool
St John Ambulance building and the Swimming Pool 1979 - by kind permission of Mr Peter Butler

The swimming pool was opposite the Ambulance Station where I started work in 1964. The pool was being run by Bill Elliot who used to arrive on his bicycle. After he retired the Pool was run by Ned Lines and his Daughter Jaquie.

The Pool was closed on Sunday but by special arrangement for Police and Ambulance staff it was possible to go in through a little door and spend a happy Sunday afternoon in the Pool.

The above picture shows from left to right the office and entrance, the Ladies changing room (the Gents changing room was to the left of the office and entrance) and the seating area on the right.

It was not well known that underneath the Changing rooms, Office, Entrance with Turnstile and Gents Changing room at the front of the Pool, but not underneath the actual Pool, was the Town Mortuary accommodating one central Marble Slab with spare wooden folding trestle.

It had two doors one on the right opening into the Car Park (rarely used) and one on the left between the St John Ambulance building for more discreet use. During daylight it was possible to reverse a vehicle from the Car Park between the buildings safely but not at night so the front gate was used. The key was held at the Police Station and the deceased was handed over to a Police officer.
